About the Sharpshooters:
Sharpshooters is a Shoreline Church social life group with a focus on promoting gun safety and enabling people to use their firearms in a safe and fun environment.
The group is lead by Josh and Jim, who are both NRA Certified Instructors. The group is split into two different sections, Recreation and Training, both of which have different requirements and meet at different times. Please read below to see what we do for both Training and Recreation!
Training
Training is for everyone, there are no age or experience limits, although we recommend that anyone younger than 18 have a parent or legal guardian. The following courses are offered through the group and we will give notice when they will be scheduled:
NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course
The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course is at least 10-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, two handed and one handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate.
NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation
The NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation — Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training — is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers. NRA FIRST Steps Pistol is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. This is a 4 hour course. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.
The training courses have a fee attached to them to pay for course materials and associated costs. This fee will vary depending on the course, but we will tell you what the fee is prior to the start of the course. After completing either of these courses, participants will be able to get their CCW permit if they wish.
Recreation
There are only 2 requirements: that you own a gun, and you are over 21. We will make exceptions to this on a person-to-person basis, at our discretion. We also welcome people who want to try a few different guns before making a purchase.
Events will be planned several weeks in advance and usually occur on a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon.
Events will be broken up in the following categories:
- Pistol shooting
- Rifle shooting
- Gun Safety
The details of each event will be outlined when the event is posted. Generally, each event will start with a safety check, course setup, and proficiency test for new or “rusty” shooters. NRA guidelines will be followed for the matches (outlined on the Match Details page). Depending on participants, these procedures may be changed to suit the experience level of the group.
