Pistol Match Details

This page outlines the rules for each match type. During each meeting we will select which matches to set up and depending on time and number of shooters, we may only get to set up 2 of the possible matches below.

Scoring:

NRA D-1 targets are “tombstone” shaped with a bull’s eye in the center. The scoring is X in the center, followed by 10 and 8 rings, with a shot placed anywhere on the target scoring 5. X is scored as a 10 but recorded as 10-X. Maximum score for a 24 round string is therefore 240-24X (240 points, 24 shots on the X).

Paper plates are used instead of steel plates, and are only scored if the hit lands with the inner circle of the plate (at least 1/2″ away from the edge on most plates)

There will be six (6) target plates placed one foot apart, edge-to-edge. They will be four (4) feet above ground level to the bottom edge. The
starting position will be with firearm holstered and both hands held shoulder high. The starting signal will be an audible type (whistle, horn, etc.) preceded by the verbal commands “READY” and “STAND BY”.

5 Yard Stage:

Match 5: Reactive Race

  • Range: 5 yards

This is a modification of a “pepper popper” race.

Procedure:

There will be two sets of five (5) clay pigeons (clays) placed one foot apart, edge-to-edge, separated by three feet between the center clays. They will be about four (4) feet above ground level to the bottom edge. Two competitors will stand a minimum of five feet apart at the firing line. The competitor on the left is assigned to the five clays on the left; the competitor on the right is assigned to the five clays on the right. The starting position will be with firearm holstered and both hands held shoulder high. The starting signal will be an audible type (whistle, horn, etc.) preceded by the verbal commands “READY” and “STAND BY”.

Race Stage:

At the signal to commence fire, the competitors will fire at each target, commencing with the outermost clay and proceeding to the center. Each clay must be broken before proceeding to the next. A maximum of 6 shots may be fired. The competitor who breaks all of their assigned clays first wins the stage. The stage is repeated. The competitors switch positions and repeat the stage 2 more times. In the case of a tie, a coin is flipped for position and the stage is repeated until there is a winner.

Penalties:

A competitor shooting more than the designated 6 shots during a given stage forfeits that stage.
